2024 Election Law Change Requires Proof of Citizenship to Register to Vote

Proof of Citizenship Required for Registration

Per HB1569, passed in 2024, registering to vote in New Hampshire now requires proof of citizenship. Bring your qualifying documents with you when registering to vote. Per the law, proof of citizenship documents include:

  • the applicant's birth certificate.
  • U.S. Passport.
  • Naturalization papers if the applicant is a naturalized citizen.
  • Any other reasonable documentation which indicates the applicant is a United States citizen.

Declaration of Candidacy

The Declaration of Candidacy must be filled out completely and signed.  Any form submitted on the last day of the filing period (January 31st) must be submitted in person by the candidate, but that prior to the last day the completed form can be mailed or delivered to the clerk provided it is received prior to the last day of the filing period.  All forms must be submitted with a "wet" signature.
